What is intense pulsed light therapy?
Intense pulsed light (IPL) is a noninvasive therapy that uses different light wavelengths to treat skin discoloration caused by:
- * Age spots
- * Acne and some acne scarring
- * Sun damage
- * Skin disorders including Rosacea
- * Birthmarks
It’s a safe and effective treatment for improving the look of the skin on your hands, face, neck, and chest with no recovery or downtime.
The Aesthetic staff uses IPL treatments to effectively reduce or remove unwanted body hair on your legs, armpits, arms, and back. The light energy renders the hair follicle inactive without damaging the surrounding skin tissue.
How do IPL treatments work?
The Aesthetic staff reviews your medical history and current symptoms to determine if IPL treatments are right for you.
During the in-office procedure, the staff will clean the treatment area thoroughly and can provide a numbing anesthetic cream to prevent discomfort during the procedure. They then apply a cooling gel to the skin and provide you with a pair of dark glasses or eye shields to protect your eyes from the light.
Using a handheld device, we apply the light pulses to your skin. Treatments may take up to 30 minutes, depending on the condition treated and the size of the treatment area.
Dr. Jaccoma will determine how many treatments you need to achieve optimum results. In many cases, 3-6 treatments are necessary, spaced out in monthly appointments. For hair removal treatments, 8-10 treatments may be required to remove visible hair effectively.
What can I expect after treatment?
Immediately following your initial treatment, you may experience redness and slight bruising in the treatment area. Your skin may also develop darker skin patches, which will peel off in several days.
If your skin is sensitive following an IPL treatment, you may need to use a sensitive skin moisturizer for several days before returning to your usual skincare routine.
You can resume your normal activities after the procedure. We recommend avoiding the sun for several weeks after treatment. They also suggest using a high-quality sunscreen to protect your skin from UV rays.
IPL treatments offer long-lasting results. Depending on your skin type, you may need to return for touch-up treatments annually to keep your skin looking fresh.
